PEOPLE WONDER WHY I LOVE TURNER CAMP  - ITC. Illinois Turner Camp. This place is a safe place. No fights, no accident. Just love. The people here are the best people you'll ever meet. I have so many brothers and sisters that I have made over the years at ITC. The fun, the smiles during the summer are what I look forward to every year. Yes, there is drama and little arguments. But it's to fix or get over. You can tell people something you wouldn't tell maybe your parents or anyone. I trust camp with everything. But the worst part about it. Is leaving. Ik you see them in about 9 months. But I can't wait that long. The best part tho is when it's over you can still talk to them like you would when they are there.  The people are my safe place there hasn't been a time when I'm uncomfortable or when I wanted to leave. I get sad leaving for the weekend. This is home and the people are my family. Idk what I would do without you. Kennedy Ivy

Thank you, Kennedy (Rita) for Sharing.  Chris Mostyn

CAMP - What a terrific Youth Program we had this, Summer.  New friends were made, old friends reacquainted, and a young staff grew up before our very eyes.  The Final Show was the cherry on the top and a big thanks once again to the Youth Committee and our co-chairpersons - Nicole Sandine and Tina Odachowski.  Even though the Youth program  wrapped up last weekend, there are still a lot of children roaming around Camp.  Keep your speed down on the roads and keep our children safe.  I would also like to thank Sarah Shiller and her Posture class participants for their generous donation to Turner Camp and following our guiding principles of "Sound Mind - Sound Body".  This weekend we have The Eiche's hosting on Saturday night at the Raths with their Wing Ding Special dinner, and we will have Live Entertainment - The Rat Pack (50's and 60's).  Check your bulletin or online at illinoisturners.org for start times.  Finally, we would also like to put out a request for volunteers to help at the Pool for the remainder of August.  Most of our staff is back at school, so to keep the Pool open during the week, it will be; swim at your own risk, 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  We need help with both supervision of the Pool and vacuuming before it opens.  There is a signup genie link to sign up for a duty - it can be found on the Turner Facebook page, illinoisturners.org and was sent out as a blast text earlier this week.  We will have someone there to meet you at the pool for both opening and vacuuming.  They will walk you thru what needs to be done. With Kindest Turner Regards - Cory Litza, Cottage Owners President

     STATE MANDATED COTTAGE CLEAN UP

    Attention Cottage owners:

The State of Illinois has various agencies that oversee the safe operation of
“Campgrounds.”  Illinois Turner Camp falls in this category.  As such, we (Camp
leadership as well ALL cottage owners) are responsible for ensuring that ALL buildings
and their surrounding areas, including cottages, are maintained in a safe, clean, and
orderly manner. This includes removal of moss on roofs and overgrowth which provides
areas for animals to hide and/or nest and bugs to accumulate. In addition, the State is
also looking at; broken windows, torn screens, structural damage to the cottage and
adjoining area, that creates an unsafe environment for others.

Earlier this summer, the State employee who reviewed our facility identified several
cottages that had an overabundance of items (grills, toys, junk, etc.) that, in their view,
represented an unacceptable safety hazard to the safe operation of the facility.
Although we were “flagged” by the State, we were fortunate to receive a warning rather
than be fined for these incidents. The citations contained a short period of time to
correct the issues, and we were required to send pictures to the State verifying the
conditions were rectified. However, the “flagging” does cause ITC leadership to remind
all cottage owners of their obligation to maintain their cottage and surrounding areas in
a safe, neat, and orderly manner.

This fall, ITC leadership will be conducting a “walk-through” review of all areas of Camp
to identify any cottages that have issues that need to be addressed in accordance with
State of Illinois requirements and ITC’s Rules and Regulations. For any cottages that
are flagged, the cottage owner will receive a written notice indicating the issues to be
rectified and will be given a period of time to address the issue(s) before any penalties
or fines are assessed by ITC.  Any fines which are assessed by the State of Illinois to
ITC will be passed thru to the cottage owner.

Our goal is to ensure that any future review(s) by the State will result in only positive
results and feedback. We appreciate your cooperation.

CAMP - We would all like to thank George and Don Mutert for their very generous donation of the shelving and stands in the walk-in cooler at the Raths.  The state inspectors came in last week to review the bar and its operations and went out of their way to say how clean and organized the cooler was.  The new shelving and stands allowed the bar committee to organize that space in the most clean and efficient manner - so again, thank you.  We continue to have Friday Fish Fry and Saturday DJ activities at the Raths thru Labor Day, so don't let your Summer end just because school has started.  The District Bags Tournament that was scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed until the All - Turner Picnic on 9/16.  Our next big event out at Camp will be Bocce Ball on 9/3, be on the lookout for sign up information.  Enjoy the upcoming Fall and consider coming out and watching a Bears game with Turner Friends at the Baren Hohle.      CAMP COMMITTEE – The Youth program wrapped up last weekend but there are still many things to do out at Camp.  The pool is still open with abbreviated hours, and we continue to have our Friday night Fish Fry and Special dinners.  This is still the active Camp season, so continue to show up for your assigned duties, limit parking near your cottage to loading and unloading and keep your speed down around Camp.  There are still kids around Camp and with the program ended, they can appear just about anywhere.  Keep your eyes open for them!  See you around Camp. Camp Committee

RESTARUANT - It's Fryday again and the Walleye are back, the Walleye are back!  Get them while they last.  On Saturday join us for the Annual Eiche Wing Ding.  Big meaty wings coated in the Blasgens and Dussman's special sauces.  Don't miss it!  And Sunday night Kim Cazel is making her Chef debut with her Beef Brisket.
And the good eats continue to Labor Day.  Next weekend's Fryday special is Grilled Salmon Burgers.  On Saturday it's the Lincoln Dinner of Leibercasen and the trimmings.  You can't go hungry here on the weekends!  Scott

PENNY SOCIAL - A huge thank you to Chris Mostyn and Barbie Litza for their donation to the
Pool on behalf of the Penny Social. Thanks for a generous $788.50 to the Memorial Fund and 788>50 to Pool Maintenance. Barb Z

THE BAR - Thank you all for a wonderful season so far! The bar is open for the next 4 weekends with all of your favorite drinks! Stop by and see us.  A special thank you to all of the bartenders who helped make this summer a success – Erin Beck, Kristin Gatz, Ashley Flowers, Dave Zweifel, Dan DeRusha, Nick Barts, Barb Wurster, and Tina Odachowski!
    A few reminders…
Please do not bring your own beverages to the bar. It is ok to walk down with 1 but anything beyond that should be purchased from the bar. We have a liquor license and just like you wouldn’t go to your own local bar with drinks or a cooler, we ask that you not bring your own to the Rath’s.
We will ID you – if you appear to be under the age of 30 and we do not know you, you will be asked for ID. Please be respectful and bring your ID with you.

ART STUDIO -  Can you believe we are down to our last 2 classes? This summer flew by!!
This Saturday, we will be working with Resin to make Wine Stoppers and Coasters.  We will be open from 9AM to 1PM.  $20 includes materials & supplies.  Please let me know if you can make it. Peace & Love,  Sonia G.

SPECIAL THANKS TO BUILDING & GROUNDS FROM THE YOUTH -
Special thanks to the staff and campers for the 2023 Final Show. This was a summer for the memories!  A special thank you to the following people for their hard work and dedication to making the Final Show a success!
    Show Producer: Adam Koester
Cory Litza for the assistance with updating the power to supply the show.
Every show has a team that assembles the backdrop, and your 2023 Crew was led by Curt Litza and his team:
    1)      Tim Kenelly
    2)      Dave Zwiefel
    3)      Gary Ruffa
    Stage lighting and set up:
    1)      Mikey Sullivan
    2)      Danny Sullivan
    Audio:
    1)      Eddie Baumann
This year we had a group of volunteers that worked on updating the trailer used to bring  show to life. A very special thanks to:
    1)      Sean Micari for spending much of the day building our trailer.
    2)      Tori Cody for putting on the decals
    3)      Brandon Pucinski

Thank you to everyone who helped teardown the show when it was all done.
We would encourage parents of program kids to shadow our members that bring this show to you to learn how you can help in the future. The Youth Committee

YOUTH - It’s the end of the summer! For Week 9 of Program, all of the campers worked on their Final Show acts. Staff put in lots of hard work to come up with ideas for the acts and lead their groups! When not practicing for Final Show, the kids played and learned football as a fun way to end the summer! Final Show was a blast and the kids blew us away with their dedication to making the show as amazing as possible. Reyna and Keith did an amazing job of putting everything together!

Thank you to everyone who helped at all with the Youth Program this summer! Even the smallest of things make a huge difference, and we couldn’t have done it without you! We hope the kids had a blast and we will miss everyone! Until next summer!

CAMP COMMITTEE – Cottage Owners - this Sunday (8/20 @ 10am) is the Final Cottage Owners meeting of the season.  Part of this meeting every year is the election of Cottage Owners officers (President, Vice-President and Secretary) for the following season.  If you are interested in running for one of these positions, please contact Barbie Zweifel as she is part of the election committee.  The Pool will be open on weekends (Staff guarded) between noon and 5 pm.  If you are scheduled to work a duty at the pool outside of those hours be aware your hours will be shortened but we still need you to show up.  During the week we have implemented a volunteer Supervisor program to watch over the pool.  These supervisors will not be guarding, it is "Swim at your own Risk" and any swimmers under the age of 18 need an adult with them who will act as their guard.  Since it is volunteer work during the week, hours and days may vary.  A sign up genius link has been established if you would like to volunteer and also to see what slots and times the pool will be open.

CAMP COMMITTEE –This past Sunday was our 3rd and Final cottage owners meeting of the season.  This was also the election of officers for next season and the motion was made and carried that the current team (Cory Litza President, Carol Greuneich Vice President and Cherie Dalbke Secretary) be retained for another year.  Also at the meeting, was a vote to move back to 2 cottage owner's meetings a season.  Starting in 2024, we will hold the opening cottage owners meeting in June and the Final meeting in August.  With email communications, blast texts thru the Reminder app and the Turner email site, there was agreement that enough information was being shared.  Calendars will come out next Spring with the exact dates of the meetings. We still have a couple more weekends of activities and meals at Camp - look forward to seeing you out there.  Camp Committee

Policy Changes – a couple of issues were raised at the recent Cottage Owner Meeting and discussed at the recent District Council meeting.  Here is an update on the outcome of those discussions.
o   Deck/shed Fees – at the recent cottage owner meeting there were questions on why decks/sheds were assessed an extra fee but patios are not.  There seem to be a lot of questions around what was charged and why, or why not.  The administration & collection of the extra fees is an administrative burden as well.  The District Council discussed a number of options, and decided to eliminate the additional fees being charged for decks, sheds, and over-sized porches. This will first be reflected in the upcoming ground leases that will be sent in early October.  Please keep in mind that this change relates to fees only.  All Turner Camp rules still apply for any construction of decks, sheds, and patios in the future.  You must have Buildings & Grounds review and approval of any construction projects.  This decision merely means we will no longer assess an annual fee for some items with the ground lease moving forward.
o   Work Duties – at the recent cottage owner meeting concerns around work duties were expressed.  Some felt there should be an age where thereafter that cottage owner would be exempt from further duties.  Others felt that there should be no buy out offered for younger cottage owners.

The Council discussed the subject of duties and buyouts and there was general agreement that the buyout option has significantly reduced last minute no shows which greatly reduces the stress and effort on our key committee volunteers. At the same time the council does see performing ones duties as a key step in building ownership in camp.  After much discussion the Council voted to raise the buyout for those under the age of 70 to $200/duty from $100/duty.  The council also considered releasing folks over a certain age from doing duties.  However there are many older cottage owners who are physically capable and love to do their duties.  In addition due to the significant older population we could be running short of people to do duties.  Which is why the older age exemption was eliminated years ago.  As the council considered some elderly cottage owners who have complained, it always seem to come back to the fact that they had kids, grandkids, and friends that enjoy Turner Camp and that could certainly step in and perform a few duties.  That or the $50/duty buyout for those 70 or older is not a significant financial hurdle.  Consequently the Council voted to leave the buyout option for 70 or older in place.
Restaurant – last Fish Fry of the year – don’t miss the Kessler Ribs mit Kraut(smoked pork chop)!  We have a few opportunities left for the season:
September 1 – Polish Sausage w/grilled onions or Buffalo Chicken Burger

    August 17 – Hudson-McCoy
    August 24 – Comstock Lode
August 31 – The All Stars
    September 2 – The L&M Experience
Cottages for bid – the Illinois District has two cottages up for bid.  To be eligible to own a cottage you must have been a member of a Turner society for at least one year by the time the bids are opened on August 27th at the next District Council meeting.  Submit your bid in a sealed envelope with a check for your full bid amount, $750 or best offer.  Include how many years you have been a member and to which Society you belong. Bids will be opened and read at the August 27th District Council meeting.  Should you have a winning bid you may take possession immediately and you will have all the rights and privileges and will not owe anything until the ground leases are mailed this fall.
Cottage 26 – one room cottage in Mosquito Hollow (near the river)
Cottage 52 – one room cottage in Aurora Lane (close to parking and the Rathskeller)

New Duty Opportunities – we are looking for folks who are interested in some non-standard unique duties.  See Scott Lau for more details on any of these.
Pool Concession Stocking – in lieu of three scheduled 2.5 hour duties you’d do a quick check of the pool concession area Friday or Saturday am and restock with supplies from the Rathskeller.  Also, making note of what is needed for next weekend.  If you were going to be gone a weekend here and there we can work with you to cover that – so don’t let that stop you.
Friday Dinner Special – in lieu of your three scheduled 2.5 hour duties you’d prepare one of your favorite dishes to serve forty as the Fish Fry Special of the week.  You can prepare at your cottage or in the Raths/Dining Hall kitchen, your call.  Camp would reimburse you for the food cost.
Saturday Snack Bar Coordinator – in lieu of your three scheduled 2.5 hour duties you’d have three Saturdays where you’d be there at the beginning of the early snack bar shift, turn the equipment on and orient the volunteers as they arrive.  Check in with the late crew shortly after their arrival to answer any questions.  Finally at the end of the snack bar shift, count and deposit the money, turn the equipment off, and check to ensure the crew cleaned up appropriately.  Prior to doing this I’d give you and review a list of items to cover with the crew and show you how to turn on the equipment.  You wouldn’t have to be in the Raths the whole time, but you could come and go.
