Illinois Turner Camp Youth Program Community Day

    Lili Fujiu shared a link.

Hello everyone! We all know that our camp has been around for as long as it has because of the amazing volunteer work of our very own Turners. The program wanted to contribute to this tradition, so we had a day called Community Day. The campers cleaned, organized equipment, picked up garbage, etc. We had a blast and wanted to share our experience with all of you! I would like to thank the Youth Committee for supplying us with the tools to make Community Day happen. I would also like to give a HUGE shoutout to Kyle Smith for capturing some awesome footage on his drone as well as Alejandro Byrne for putting together and editing the music video below! Enjoy!

We do not own the rights to the music in this video: Call On Me by Starley (Ryan Riback remix)

Congratulations to last week’s Swimmer of the Week: Tiny Tots - Nathan Becker, Beginners - Vivie Smith, Advanced Beginners - Frankie Bialk, Intermediates - Oliver Smith, and Swimmers - Addie Tuecke! Some pool reminders; one whistle means the lifeguard is trying to get your attention, two whistles means the lifeguards and trying to talk to each other, and three whistles mean there is an emergency, and everyone needs to get out of the pool. There will also be randomized weekly saves conducted, if you are at the pool when this drill is happening, please do not be alarmed as it will become clear in a moment that the lifeguards are only practicing. Next week is also Water Show, the theme will be announced on Monday! There will be a costume meeting at the pool on Monday, July 5th at 3pm in the concessions. The show is on Saturday, July 10th at 6pm! Please contact Madison Dahm for further questions. Keep up the great work swimming, campers! Thank you, Madison

Recycling - Welcome back everyone! How nice is it to be back in our camp even if it is only mostly open??!! Let’s hope we never see another year from hell like we did last year. Like everything else the recycling program took a hit but survived because you made it survive. Thank you so much! We mean that.
We have been working on recouping and revamping the program and this is where it’s at. There are still the two large recycling dumpsters, one in the large parking lot the other directly behind the Rathskeller. There is a small can in the drink/ food area at the pool also. At the Rathskeller, inside there are 3 blue cans clearly marked with the recycling logo and with a lid on them that will only accept cans and bottles. There are the same outside the Raths, just not with blue cans. This is still a work in progress and will continue to improve and evolve and the year goes on. Thanks for your help with this. Building and Grounds

Pool Tags - There will be no pool tags this year, and the pool will be restricted to members and their immediate family.

CAMP - The Water Show last weekend reminds us that we are past the midpoint of the Summer Program out at Camp.  The Water Show was a great success, we have a new; Jr. Prince/Princess, Prince/Princess and King/Queen and Congratulations to them all - we are proud to have them represent Turner Camp.  We also had a very active Saturday night at the Raths, with multiple entertainment options and fun had by all.  This weekend we have a full Turkey Dinner (Thanksgiving in July!) complete with all the sides.  Come join us and celebrate a holiday dinner with Turner Family.

The Staff has done a tremendous job to date.  Take a moment to stop one of them and thank them for their time, energy, patience and support they give all of our children.  I also want to recognize our Youth Co-Chairs - Nicole Sandine and Tina Odechowski who put in tireless hours to support the Staff and Turner Families.  They are young parents too and are sacrificing time with their own families so they can bring a safe and fun experience to the 60 plus children in the Program.
Thank you, Cory Litza - Acting ITC President

SUNDAY DINNER -  this Sunday's Donna Special is cancelled in lieu of the Betty Barts memorial.  We still look forward to seeing everyone down at the Raths for the memorial, but the timing would be too tight to accomplish both.  Thank you, Donna

YOUTH - WHAT A WEEK!!! Program went super well and consisted of plenty of Water Show practice and games! The campers of the week were Gavin Beeftink and Lacie Power for their awesome attitudes and participation! Water Show was a blast. The kids were so excited to show their parents all that they have learned, especially diving board skills! The swimmers of the week this week were Nathan Becker, Daniel Buckley, Brandon Odachowski, Declan DeRusha, and Oliver Northway! They all had so much enthusiasm and determination while preparing for Water Show! Week 6 includes the 9 and Under sleepout and a field trip for the 10 and overs to a trampoline park! We hope they enjoy these next few weeks leading up to Olympic Week and Final Show!

RESTARUANT - Restaurant – we've had some great food offerings this past week or so.  Thanks to Donna Litza for the Sunday Evening BLT Specials!  Thanks to Joe Gatz for his Smoked Pulled Pork!  And finally, thanks to Tom Webb for his Texas Cheese Steaks!  It's a team effort around here and we have a great team!
Here are the last few Fish Fry Crew members.
Jim Gerstbrein - married to Jean (Loscher) and a long time Turner.  He is one of our longest crew members going back about 20 years.  When faithful Eleanor Weber retired Jim stepped in to help.  I don't think he realized it would be a 20 year+ commitment!  He fit in well with Bruce Scott and I and took Bruce's gruff training well.  He's enjoys dressing up in tights and roll around the floor trying to pin other guys.  Give that man an Old Style!
Bobby Collins - is the newest (last week) and married to Jenny (Koehler) a lifelong Turner.  They live in the Florida panhandle; some call it the redneck riviera.  And Bobby's got the accent to prove it!  He approached us and offered to heon Friday's.  Little did he know we'd have a crew member taking a couple well deserved nights off and he was immediately drafted!  We threw him right in on frying the fish and he did great!  We appreciate his help.  Get that man a Woodford Reserve and water! Thanks, Scott

The Camp Committee would like to thank all of you for your patience as we have worked with some staffing issues with our Bathrooms this season.  We have faced both illness and injury to the 2 Turner members who are overseeing the bathrooms and it has left us short staffed.  We have had volunteers step up and clean their bathrooms and others offer to stock and maintain those in their areas.  The true Turner Spirit and it has been wonderful to see.  We are now back at full strength with our bathroom staff, so we are optimistic we will be able to keep them maintained moving forward.  With that being said, if you are in your local bathroom and see it could use a quick sweeping or the garbage can is full and should be emptied - we are always happy to accept the help?. With Turner Greetings - Cory Litza, Acting Camp President

POSTURE FITNESS THANK YOU!!! –  Sarah for all your dedication to fitness.  I have received a few emails about how great your class has been.  I would like to share them with you and all of Turner Camp.  Thanks again!!!  Chris Mostyn

From Sue Muntaner - This class is life changing. Whether you are 20 or 80, all bodies have some dysfunction and Sarah’s class shows you how to fix it. The question isn’t why go, but why haven’t you? I guarantee you’ll ask yourself the same question after one class.

From Andy Warren – Feel more at ease in your body. Small corrections make a difference in body alignment and can alleviate pain.  Pain-free movement will help with all sports and activities.  Not just for women only.

From Mindy Sharp -  I would like to express my appreciation to Sarah Shiller for teaching her pain-free Egoscue classes every weekday.  I hope others will join us – if not this year, then next year.  Everyone young and old, any body type will feel immediate benefit from  these gentle stretches. All money from these classes go back to camp. Thank you, Sarah, for your time and effort you have dedicated to us.

From Sterling - I am in my 20’s, athletic, and I have taken ballet my entire life. I sit at a computer all day, which can cause some discomfort. After one class, I could feel the difference. Why wait to fix the problem, when you can learn to fix it now before it is a huge issue.

Big Turner Beer Stein Sale - Don't forget the Big Beer Stein Sale next weekend at the Raths on Friday & Saturday evening (July 29th & 30th).Thanks, Marianne Markus

The first half of Summer has flown by and these Campers are just getting to the good stuff! This past week we had Tiny Tot Day on Monday where the 5 year olds from the Tiny Tot Program came up for an hour to experience what it's like to be one of the big kids for the day! We had a great turnout and we can't wait to see these kiddos in the Program next year! As well on Wednesday, June 28th, our 9 and Under had their annual Sleepout! It was a great time and the campers will now hold a memory that will last all their lives! With the younger kids having their sleepout the 10 and Overs earned their Field Trip to Adrenaline Monkey on Thursday, June 29th! It was a wonderful time and the kids sure got their workout/Calisthenics in for the day! Our Mystery Morning this week was a game of Clue in which campers were in 4 teams and had to run around camp finding clues to find the missing staff member! Later that night at Awards we had our "Turners Got Talent!" Talent Show and the campers did not disappoint, so many great acts! We want to thank everyone again for their unwavering support, us Staff truly appreciate the support system we have at the place we call home, ITC!

Water show week is in full swing! Campers have been practicing their acts and learning the opening and closing with our show director, Reyna Beorgerhoff and Pool Director, Kylie Gatz. CAMP COMMITTEE - we are rapidly moving through our Turner Camp Youth program with only a few weeks left.  We want to thank all of the volunteers who have participated so far in making this a terrific season, not only for the Youth and Tiny Tots but for Camp as a whole.  But the work is not done - we have the Final Show on 8/5 and it requires many volunteers to set up and tear down the event.  We will be setting up an on-line volunteer tool that you will be able to log into and submit your information.  If you have children who have been enjoying their time in the program this Summer, this is a great opportunity to help support them and their experiences.  We will communicate the on-line sign-up tool specifics in the next Bulletin.  Please check the bulletin and your Camp Calendar as this weekend brings; Penny Social, 4 Person Volleyball Tournament, Ladies Auxiliary Card Party, New/Existing Cottage Owners Meeting and Baers Birthday Party - a full weekend for certain.  See you around Camp,   Camp Committee

RESTARUANT - The hits just keep on coming!  The Friday Fish Fry special is Kurt Zitta's Goulash (could be Hungarian, who knows?).  On Saturday Tom Webb (the ringer) is bring us his King Ranch Chicken (who was King, and what was on his ranch?).  Next week's Friday Fish fry Special is Laurie VanDahm's Pulled Pork tenderloin.  We appreciate when folks step up and do a special as it makes it eaiser on the Restaurant crew.  If you have something you'd like to share with your fellow campers, let me know! (Scott Lau This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
This week's spotlight is on Randy Roe.  He's the 3rd longest serving Fish Fry crew member.  His mom is Val Roe who served on council and was the District Secretary in the early 2000s.  Randy has served on council for years and most recently piloted Aurora Turners through the pandemic.  Which is no small feat!  He's our senior Fry guy and has taught Randy Gunderson (more on him next week) everything he knows.  Thanks Randy!

SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL - Bring your cowboy hats and wear your boots. Come have a taste of the southwest this Saturday night. Tom and the crew are serving up a Texas favorite, King Ranch chicken casserole. The king Ranch is the largest ranch in Texas sitting at 825,000 acres. No it is not the four sixes ranch that’s on Yellowstone, that’s Hollywood, although that is a real ranch and is very large also. Come on, it’s Texas!! King Ranch chicken is one of the fixings they serve up to their hundreds of cowboys to help them keep raglan those cattle and they love it. So come on down to the Rathskeller ranch and get your fill y’all!!

Restaurant – This Friday don’t miss the Walleye special – they’re back!  Other upcoming fine culinary opportunities:
July 21 – Donna Litza’s homemade Italian Beefs & Sausage Tennis Committee Fundraiser Dinner
July 27 – Laurie Vandahm’s BBQ Pork Tenderloin
July 28 – Founders Day Dinner Sauerbraten or Pork Roast w/Bev Zitta’s homemade Spaetzle & all the trimmings
July 29 – European Breakfast Pool Fundraiser
Entertainment – we have entertainment lined up for every Friday this summer.  Here’s the next couple of weeks:
July 20 – Piano Man Peter Miletic
July 27 – Organ Sing-Along and Dorothy Janssens Celebration of Life
August 3 - Organ Sing Along
Volunteer Duties – just a reminder that fulfilling your duties is important to the functioning of camp and our offerings.  Your three duties are a key obligation of being a cottage owner.  If something comes up it is your responsibility to switch with someone or find a suitable replacement.  When duties are missed committee chairs often have to step in to keep things going.  Those folks are already giving generously of their time and really don’t want to do another duty.  A missed duty will result in a $250 fine.  Remember to dress suitably for your duties.  Closed toed shoes and t-shirts are recommended for kitchen duties.
Cottages for bid – the Illinois District has two cottages up for bid.  To be eligible to own a cottage you must have been a member of a Turner society for at least one year by the time the bids are opened on July 23rd at the next District Council meeting.

Submit your bid in a sealed envelope with a check for your full bid amount, which must be the minimum bid of $1,500 or more.  Include how many years you have been a member and to which Society you belong.  Bids will be opened and read at the July 23rd District Council meeting.  Should you have a winning bid you may take possession immediately and you will have all the rights and privileges (pool tags, youth program, coupon book, etc.) for the remainder of the 2018 season.
Cottage 26 – one room cottage in Mosquito Hollow.
Cottage 52 – one room cottage in Aurora Lane
Cottage Reclamation Opportunity – the District is also in possession of cottage 237, which is in severe disrepair.  It is located just past the Sugar Bowl below the service road where the road bends.  There is a picture of this cottage next to the definition of “Fixer Upper” in the dictionary.  Since this cottage will require a significant upgrade investment The District is not asking for any bid.  It is a larger footprint cottage and we are looking for someone who is handy and willing to bring it back to life.  If you are interested please see Howard Boress & Kurt Potthast of Buildings & Grounds.  The county building codes are very strict with what can and can’t be done and they’ll help you review the possibilities.  Once you come up with a plan approved by Buildings & Grounds the Council will review and approve.  As a side note, this is why the Camp Committee periodically does walk-throughs of camp and details repairs/work for cottages if they need it.  This one got away from us and we’re trying to make sure cottages don’t get to the point of having to be torn down.
Volunteer Opportunity – thank you to Kate Ganatos for being one of our Youth Committee co-chairs last year and this year!  Kate is stepping down at the end of this season so there is an opening to co-chair with Chris Mostyn next year.  If you are interested please see Chris for more details and let me (Scott Lau) know if you interested.

Unique Duty Opportunity – we are looking for someone who could take ownership of checking the pool supplies twice each weekend, bring up needed supplies from the Rathskeller, and note what supplies are needed for next weekend.  This would take about 30-45 minutes per weekend and would be in lieu of be assigned three specific duties.  If there was a weekend or two you would be out of town that could be covered by someone else.  If interested please see Scott Lau for more details.
JUNIOR PENNY SOCIAL – Looking forward to seeing all of you next week July 20 following the Awards.  We are looking for donations.  They can be dropped off at the Junior house, Jody Borck or Tom Webs cottage. Thank you Jody Borck
VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT - The 4 Person Volleyball Tournament is Saturday, July 21st. Bring your team to the Sugar Bowl by 8:45 AM and be ready to play at 9:00 AM. All players are welcome regardless of skill level. Cost is $ 40.00 per team. If you have any questions, call Jim Haderlein at 773-573-8398.
Ladies Club House Rental – The Ladies Club House is available for Rent if you are having an event and need a charming space.  Rental is $50 per event. Ann
Ladies Auxiliary –  Card Party will be on Saturday, July 21st at 7:30 P.M.  Tickets are $2.00.  Donations are welcome.  Raffles are 3 for $1.00. Ladies Auxiliary:  Date for Craft Fair is Sunday, August 12th - 11 A.M. If you would like to participate it will be $10 a table and you can contact Gerry Malone at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Ann Trankle at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Spread throughout Camp are numerous blue 55 gallon drums marked for cans only. We have placed them so they would be readily accessible to all campers. Please use them for their purpose. We have also placed blue recycle cans in and around the Raths. Two are inside and one outside the main door. These cans have the recycle logo on them and are meant for bottles and cans.      Restaurant – This Friday don’t miss the Smoked Butt mitt kraut & mashed potatoes Special.  Thanks to Laura Oroni & Crew for a fabulous Turkey dinner last Saturday!  Other upcoming fine culinary opportunities
July 20 – the Walleye is back by popular demand!!!
July 27 – Laurie Vandahm’s BBQ Pork Tenderloin
Entertainment – we have entertainment lined up for every Friday this summer.  Here’s the next couple of weeks
This Friday – Vaguely Familiar Acoustic Duo
July 20 – Piano Man Peter Miletic
July 27 – Organ Sing-Along and Dorothy Janssens Celebration of Life
Volunteer Duties – just a reminder that fulfilling your duties is important to the functioning of camp and our offerings.

Cottage 26 – one room cottage in Mosquito Hollow
Communication – Jim Roth is leading a committee to develop ideas to improve communicate at camp.  If you are interested in serving on this committee please see Jim Roth or email him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Sound Mind, Sound Body – that’s the heart of Turnerism, Turning, fitness, and athletic endeavors.  Camp provides a lot of opportunities to keep your bodies well tuned and to play.
Postural Fitness – a gentle stretching program to keep your body loose and limber.  Meets during some mornings at the Rathskeller.  See certified instructor Sara Schiller the program leader for details and nominal costs.
Boot Camp – a higher energy level fitness class to challenge each participant.  Meets during some mornings at the Rathskeller.  See certified instructor Courtney Barts the program leader for details and nominal costs.

Pool Fundraiser – July 29 @ 8:30 in the Dining Hall. European breakfast will include scrambled eggs, bacon, meats, cheeses, fruit and yogurt all for only $10.  Thank you Dave Zwiefel

IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION – PEOPLE ARE DRIVING VERY FAST. PLEASE SLOW DOWN! Now that camp is open everyone will need to unload and move your vehicles to the parking lots.  It makes no difference if it is a public road or not it is about the safety of our children, as well as being able to use the road to drive in and out and not having to maneuver around parked cars. Thank you, Art Stevenson

Restaurant – This Friday don’t miss the Guiness Beef Brisket Special.  Thanks to the Fry Master Jim Gerstbrein for the awesome Walleye last Friday!  Other upcoming fine culinary opportunities
Saturday July 7 – Laura & Marlana Turkey Dinner
Friday July 14 – Smoked Butt mitt Kraut
Entertainment – we have entertainment lined up for every Friday this summer.  Here’s the next couple of weeks:
This Friday – Frank Sinatra had to cancel. 290 East Band will be playing instead.
July 13 – Piano Man Peter Miletic
Volunteer Duties – just a reminder that fulfilling your duties is important to the functioning of camp and our offerings.  Your three duties are a key obligation of being a cottage owner.  If something comes up it is your responsibility to switch with someone or find a suitable replacement.  When duties are missed committee chairs often have to step in to keep things going.  Those folks are already giving generously of their time and really don’t want to do another duty.  A missed duty will result in a $250 fine.  Remember to dress suitably for your duties.  Closed toed shoes and t-shirts are recommended for kitchen duties.
Decks, sheds, cottage construction – just a reminder to contact Howard Boress or Kurt Potthast to have Buildings & Grounds review and approve all project plans and timing of the project.
Cottages for bid – the Illinois District has two cottages up for bid.  To be eligible to own a cottage you must have been a member of a Turner society for at least one year by the time the bids are opened on July 23rd at the next District Council meeting.  Submit your bid in a sealed envelope with a check for your full bid amount, which must be the minimum bid of $1500 or more.

Cottage 26 – one room cottage in Mosquito Hollow Cottage 52 – one room cottage in Aurora Lane
See certified instructor Sara Schiller the program leader for details and nominal costs.
o   Boot Camp – a higher energy level fitness class to challenge each participant.  Meets during some mornings at the Rathskeller.  See certified instructor Courtney Barts the program leader for details and nominal costs.
