  • BUILDING & GROUNDS

The Building and Grounds Committee is responsible for approving cottage construction projects, overseeing major tree trimming and removals and coordinating improvements and repairs on Camp buildings, service roads, parking lots and grounds. A dedicated group of Turners donate many volunteer hours each year to maintain and improve Turner Camp. Two major 2011 projects are adding gravel and re-grading the service roads, and installing erosion control plantings on the slope between the big parking lot and the athletic field.

    Construction

The Illinois District has placed a moratorium on all new cottage and new room additions. However, all other exterior cottage alterations and modifications, installation of a porch, deck, patio, shed, satellite dish, hard-wire telephone lines, natural gas lines, and laying of any tiling or pipeline must be reviewed and approved by the Building and Grounds Committee prior to work starting.

All exterior construction, except for emergency repair work as defined by Building and Grounds, must be started after the Camp season closes in the fall and completed before the season opens in late spring. If a project will not be completed by the start of the Camp season, the site must be cleared of all equipment and protection installed to make the area safe for the children of Camp during the season. Work may be restarted after the close of the season.

Construction applications, including drawings (if required), must be received by the Building & Grounds Committee by March 15th for spring construction and by July 15th for fall construction. Completed applications may be sent electronically to the Building and Grounds Committee electronically HERE or via U.S. mail at:

    Illinois District American Turners

    Building & Grounds Committee

    Route 3, Box 238

    Algonquin, IL 60102

Refer to Section V. of theRules and Regulations of the Illinois Turner Campfor additional information on construction.

    Tree Trimming/Tree Removal

We are fortunate to have several hundred trees in Camp, many over 75 years old. Major tree trimming and removal, therefore, is a large ongoing project for this committee.

Tree removal, cabling and major tree trimming must be first approved by the Building and Grounds Committee. Requests for approval, including your name, cottage number, telephone number and an explanation of the situation may be sent electronically HERE or via U.S. mail at:

    Illinois District American Turners

    Building & Grounds Committee

    Route 3, Box 238

    Algonquin, IL 60102

Cost for removal of a tree deemed as dangerous by the Building and Grounds Committee will be borne by Camp. Other approved tree removal will be at cottage owner expense. Cost for removal of tree limbs overhanging a cottage will be split between Camp and the cottage owner. Approved cabling is at cottage owner expense.

General tree trimming does not require committee approval and is the responsibility of the cottage owner.

    Grass and Weed Cutting

In order to maintain the natural beauty of our Camp, each cottage owner should take pride in the physical appearance of their cottage and the surrounding area. All cottage owners have the responsibility of cutting the grass and weeds surrounding their cottage.

    Questions and Reporting a Problem

Questions may be sent and problems under the purview of the Building and Grounds Committee reported HEREor by U.S. mail to:

    Illinois District American Turners

    Building & Grounds Committee

    Route 3, Box 238

    Algonquin, IL 60102

During any camp organized activity, the staff is going to enforce the rules for misconduct, including, but not limited to, the following: using violence, force, noise, profanity/obscenity, coercion, threats, intimidation, fear, bullying, or other comparable conduct toward anyone or urging other campers to engage in such conduct.

    Behavior Management Plan

Effective discipline has two purposes: to encourage self-esteem, self-control and responsibility; and to discourage irresponsibility and inappropriate behavior. To be effective, discipline must be a part of a positive, respectful relationship between adult and child. While children cannot assume the same rights and responsibilities as adults, they can be treated as equals in terms of worth and respect. Discipline is not only stopping children from doing wrong; it’s helping them to do right. The most effective way to discipline is to prevent problems from arising in the first place.

Rules are more likely to be followed if they are:

Consistent - don’t change every day

Explicit - are clearly defined and understood by the child

Predictable - are known ahead of time

Upheld - there is follow-through with a consequence when a rule is broken

When children are anxious, they often become agitated and behave inappropriately. As they gain a sense of security from knowing what to expect, their anxiety decreases which in turn reduces inappropriate behavior.

    Three Strike Policy

Illinois Turner Camp has implemented a three-strike behavior policy. The first infraction of the behavior management plan will result in a verbal warning. The second infraction will result in time-out or loss of privilege. The third infraction will result in loss of privilege and notification of the parent(s) at the end of the camp day. Two three-strike days will result in a conference involving the counselor, the Camp director, a member of the ITC Youth Committee, the camper, and his or her parent(s). Three three-strike days will result in a one-day suspension from the camp program. Four or more three-strike days could result in further suspension or dismissal from the program.Serious infractions will be handled on a case by case basis.

    Zero Tolerance Policy

Illinois Turner Camp has azero tolerance policy in regards to physical aggression. Any camper who commits an act of physical aggression against another camper, staff member, or parent will be immediately dismissed and be escorted to his or her cottage by a member of the Camp staff. The camper may be reinstated after a conference with staff, Youth Committee, and the child’s parent(s).

    • First offense:Camper(s) will be asked to sit out for the remainder of the activity.

    • Second offense:Camper(s) will be escorted back to their cottage for the remainder of the activity or the rest of the camp day.

    • Third offense:Camper(s) will meet with the Director and the Youth Committee to discuss the matter

If you have any questions please feel free to ask Director or your Youth Committee

We do ask if you have anything to discuss with the staff please wait until appropriate working hours and please do not talk to life guards while on duty. Life guards need to have all eyes on the pool. Safety is our number one concern.
