BUILDING & GROUNDS

The Building and Grounds Committee is responsible for approving cottage construction projects, overseeing major tree trimming and removals and coordinating improvements and repairs on Camp buildings, service roads, parking lots and grounds. A dedicated group of Turners donate many volunteer hours each year to maintain and improve Turner Camp. Two major 2011 projects are adding gravel and re-grading the service roads, and installing erosion control plantings on the slope between the big parking lot and the athletic field.

Construction

The Illinois District has placed a moratorium on all new cottage and new room additions. However, all other exterior cottage alterations and modifications, installation of a porch, deck, patio, shed, satellite dish, hard-wire telephone lines, natural gas lines, and laying of any tiling or pipeline must be reviewed and approved by the Building and Grounds Committee prior to work starting.

All exterior construction, except for emergency repair work as defined by Building and Grounds, must be started after the Camp season closes in the fall and completed before the season opens in late spring. If a project will not be completed by the start of the Camp season, the site must be cleared of all equipment and protection installed to make the area safe for the children of Camp during the season. Work may be restarted after the close of the season.

Construction applications, including drawings (if required), must be received by the Building & Grounds Committee by March 15th for spring construction and by July 15th for fall construction. Completed applications may be sent electronically to the Building and Grounds Committee electronically HERE or via U.S. mail at:

Refer to Section V. of the Rules and Regulations of the Illinois Turner Camp for additional information on construction.

Tree Trimming/Tree Removal

We are fortunate to have several hundred trees in Camp, many over 75 years old. Major tree trimming and removal, therefore, is a large ongoing project for this committee.

Tree removal, cabling and major tree trimming must be first approved by the Building and Grounds Committee. Requests for approval, including your name, cottage number, telephone number and an explanation of the situation may be sent electronically HERE or via U.S. mail at:

Illinois District American Turners

Building & Grounds Committee

Route 3, Box 238

Algonquin, IL 60102

Cost for removal of a tree deemed as dangerous by the Building and Grounds Committee will be borne by Camp. Other approved tree removal will be at cottage owner expense. Cost for removal of tree limbs overhanging a cottage will be split between Camp and the cottage owner. Approved cabling is at cottage owner expense.

General tree trimming does not require committee approval and is the responsibility of the cottage owner.

Grass and Weed Cutting

In order to maintain the natural beauty of our Camp, each cottage owner should take pride in the physical appearance of their cottage and the surrounding area. All cottage owners have the responsibility of cutting the grass and weeds surrounding their cottage.
